How to Get Healthcare for Refugees in Ottawa

Wednesday, December 23, 2015

Sponsors or refugees looking for healthcare in Ottawa are encouraged to call the Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre (ONHC) at 613-691-0192. The ONHC is the main organization tasked with coordinating refugee healthcare in Ottawa.

The following information will be requested in order to schedule medical appointments:

  • Name and date of birth of all refugees
  • Permanent address and phone number of refugees (if available)
  • Language(s) of the refugees
  • List of any health concerns
  • Whether or not an on-going primary health care provider has been arranged

How it Works

The ONHC will see as many refugees as possible onsite for initial assessments and screenings, and immunizations.

When the ONHC reaches capacity, refugees will be directed to primary care hubs across Ottawa for initial screening. These hubs will be located at a number of community health centres and family health teams.

Some hubs will be able to accept refugees as ongoing clients. When hubs do not have the capacity to accept refugees as ongoing clients, the ONHC will support sponsors if any assistance is required to find a permanent primary care provider for the refugees. The primary care hubs will maintain medical records and will arrange for file transfer, if and when appropriate.
